The Solution

Upon commencement of the task, the team encountered a pit that was marked as a confined space — immediately signalling a high-risk situation requiring a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS). The presence of water filled to the brim further complicated the scenario, introducing additional risks such as potential drowning and chemical exposure from decomposing organic materials.

The Solution

Risk Identification and Initial Assessment. The initial assessment was hampered by the water’s opacity, concealing the true depth and conditions inside the pit. As the combi truck began extracting the water, it became evident that the pit was deeper than any team member anticipated, ultimately measuring a hazardous 3 meters deep. This revelation added a significant high-risk category to the project: the risk of falling from height, which could have severe consequences.

Recognising the multi-faceted risks, the project was paused to reassess safety strategies thoroughly. The team engaged in detailed discussions to evaluate every potential risk and the appropriate controls, underscoring NPS’s commitment to not only recognising but actively managing workplace hazards.

Innovative Engineering Controls

Establishing the need for enhanced safety measures, our in-house engineering team was mobilised immediately to develop a solution that would ensure the safety of all personnel involved, without hindering the functionality needed for effective maintenance. The decision to engineer a custom guard to prevent falls into the pit exemplified our commitment to responsive action. The design incorporated specific adaptations to accommodate the combi truck’s equipment. This not only safeguarded the operators from potential falls but also considered ergonomic aspects to minimise physical strain and prevent injuries. The thoughtful design process was a testament to NPS’s progressive mindset, always looking to improve and innovate in the face of operational challenges.

Once fabricated, the guard underwent rigorous testing to confirm its effectiveness and operational safety. Following successful validation, it was permanently installed at the stormwater pit site. This not only enhanced safety measures but also demonstrated our proactive approach to risk management, embodying our company values of being responsive to immediate needs and progressive in our safety solutions.

The Outcome

The installation of the custom guard has set a new standard for safety, reflecting NPS’s dedication to pioneering solutions that protect workers and streamline operations. It represents a significant advancement in our ongoing efforts to promote a safe working environment, reinforcing our role as leaders in innovative engineering controls within the industry. Throughout this project, NPS not only demonstrated an ability to swiftly address and mitigate complex safety challenges but also showcased our dedication to playing as a team and caring deeply about the outcomes of our work.
