Delivering critical water infrastructure to support two new education facilities ahead of opening

Essential infrastructure plays a critical role in ensuring new communities can access the services they depend on from day one.

NPS was engaged to deliver multiple water service connections, fire services, hydrants and associated infrastructure for two newly constructed education facilities in Melbourne’s growing northern corridor. With project completion approaching and water services yet to be installed, a rapid delivery program was required to ensure the facilities were ready for operation.

  • Water service connections
  • Fire service connections
  • Water main infrastructure works
  • Meter installation
  • Civil excavation and rock boring

Challenge

The project required the delivery of multiple water and fire service connections within a compressed timeframe as construction works neared completion.

The site presented varying ground conditions, with several services requiring specialist rock boring while others could be installed through open-cut excavation methods. Coordinating the installation of a range of water infrastructure assets while maintaining project timelines required a responsive and highly efficient delivery approach.

Service delivery

NPS mobilised a dedicated crew of four plumbers and two apprentices to deliver the required water infrastructure works.

The project included the installation of four fire services, four general services, four non-domestic services, divide valves, hydrants and customer metering infrastructure. Where site conditions allowed, open-cut installation methods were used, while specialist rock-boring equipment was deployed to complete the remaining service connections.

By carefully sequencing construction activities and adapting to changing site conditions, the team completed all connections, meter installations and associated infrastructure works within a single week.

Impact

The successful delivery ensured both education facilities had access to essential water infrastructure ahead of operational handover.

By combining technical capability, specialist equipment and an agile delivery model, NPS helped maintain construction timelines while providing the infrastructure required to support future students, staff and the surrounding community.
